Neck liposuction is a fat reduction procedure that removes fatty tissue resistant to diet and exercise from the chin and neck area. The result is an improved neck, chin and jawline definition and overall lower face contours. If you’re considering neck contouring with liposuction, please view our pages on liposuction, neck lift and chin surgery as well.

Is neck liposuction right for you?

Neck liposuction is recommended for patients who want to get rid of a double chin and improve jawline contours. Some patients also seek neck liposuction to further contour and define their lower face in combination with chin or jaw augmentation.

Because neck liposuction is designed to permanently reduce fat deposits and does not address sagging skin, it is not recommended as a standalone treatment for patients with skin laxity in the neck or neck wrinkles. In such cases, a neck lift is ideal, although neck liposuction may be performed to complement neck lift results. Similarly, a neck lift may be recommended in addition to neck liposuction if reducing neck fat will result in skin laxity.

As with any surgical procedure, Dr. Weston will talk with you about your cosmetic goals, assess your medical history and evaluate your overall health before determining if you are a candidate for neck liposuction.

What to expect during neck liposuction

When performed in a localized area with a relatively small amount of fatty tissue, such as the chin and neck areas, liposuction is usually performed with local, or tumescent, anesthesia and conscious sedation. However, if neck liposuction is being combined with a face or neck lift, general anesthesia is typically recommended.

Small incisions are hidden under the chin or behind the ears, and a thin suction tube called a cannula is inserted to remove the fat from your neck. The incisions are not stitched closed to allow for elimination of remaining anesthetic fluid after the procedure. Scarring from the incisions is minimal and rarely noticeable.

Neck liposuction recovery

Due to the effects of sedation and anesthesia, you will need a ride home after neck liposuction. You will be required to wear a compression garment, or tight chin strap, for at least a week after surgery in order to minimize swelling and bruising. Within three to six weeks, swelling and bruising should be mostly resolved.

Recovering from neck liposuction does not take long, as the procedure is minimally invasive. Within a few days, most patients resume normal daily activities, such as work and school, and light exercise may be resumed about a week after surgery. However, it may take up to six months or more to heal completely and see your final results. If neck liposuction is combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures, recovery and down time may be increased.

Neck liposuction is a positive way to sculpt a smoother jawline and neck contour. If you think this procedure is the right choice for you, contact Jane Weston, MD today at (650) 457-6291 to schedule your personal consultation with Dr. Weston.
