Male breast reduction is a surgical procedure that corrects the overgrowth of breast tissue and fat deposits in male breasts. Male breast reduction surgery not only helps contour the chest area and improve symmetry; it also relieves the stress and emotional anguish gynecomastia, or the development of feminine breasts or “man boobs,” can cause.
In many cases, a male breast reduction can be performed with liposuction, which removes fat from the chest. We also frequently perform breast reduction for women.
If you’re one of the estimated 40 to 60 percent of men suffering from gynecomastia you may be a candidate for male breast reduction surgery.
Although male breast reduction is suitable for men of all ages, it is discouraged for men who are obese or overweight and have not attempted weight loss through diet and exercise, as well as for men who consume excessive amounts of alcohol or use marijuana or anabolic steroids. Male breast reduction surgery is also not recommended for teenagers whose breasts are still changing as a result of hormonal influence.
During consultation, Dr. Weston will talk with you about your lifestyle and cosmetic concerns and goals. She will also review your medical history and assess your health before determining whether you are a good candidate for male breast reduction surgery.
If your breasts are enlarged primarily due to excess fat deposits in the chest area, liposuction will be performed to improve chest contours. However, if excessive glandular breast tissue is the cause of your enlarged breasts, tissue and skin excision, or removal, will be performed. Sometimes, a combination approach involving both liposuction and excision is necessary.
Nipple repositioning and areola reduction may also be performed during male breast reduction surgery, and Dr. Weston will explain which surgical techniques and procedure combinations will be necessary in your case.
Local anesthesia with IV sedation or general anesthesia will be used during your male breast reduction procedure.
Due to the effects of anesthesia, you will need a ride home after male breast reduction surgery. Most patients return to work and normal daily activities within one week, and more strenuous activity and physical exercise can be resumed after three weeks.
Typically if liposuction alone is performed, your male breast reduction recovery period will be shorter than if excision is also performed.
Wearing a compression garment for a several weeks after surgery may be recommended to reduce swelling. Most swelling and bruising should be resolved within a few weeks, however it will take at least three months to see your final results.
To ensure optimal results are achieved, be sure to keep follow-up appointments and follow all post-operative care instructions provided to you by Dr. Weston.
