Is breast reduction right for you?

If you are experiencing pain in your back, neck or shoulders, rashes, low self-esteem or dissatisfaction with the large size of your breasts, you may be a candidate for breast reduction surgery.

During consultation, Dr. Weston will assess your medical history and evaluate your health and breast anatomy. At this time, Dr. Weston will also discuss your concerns and goals with you and answer all of your questions about breast reduction surgery.

What to expect during breast reduction surgery

Depending on your needs, breast reduction surgery may be performed on one or both breasts under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation.

A variety of surgical techniques may be used for breast reduction, however the most common are the pedicle method or free nipple graft (FNG) method. The pedicle method is generally preferred, as it allows nipple function and sensation to be maintained, whereas the FNG method does not, however the FNG method must be used in cases involving extremely large breasts.

Because reducing large breasts often leaves excess skin that has stretched under the weight of your natural breast tissue, a breast lift may also be recommended.

Based on your unique goals and anatomy, Dr. Weston will recommend the best procedure or combination of procedures and surgical techniques to reduce and enhance your breasts.

Breast reduction recovery

Due to the effects of anesthesia, you will need a ride home after breast reduction surgery.

Dressings and gauze will be kept on your incisions for two to three days post-operatively, and a surgical bra with no underwire must be worn for four weeks.

You can return to work and normal daily activities within three to four days following your breast reduction, however sexual activity should be avoided for at least one week and strenuous activity should be avoided for two to three weeks.

Breast reduction scars, which are typically located around the nipple, vertically down the underside of the breast and sometimes in the breast fold, will heal and fade over time. Swelling may take several months to subside, and it will take at least six months to see your final breast reduction results.

Be sure to follow all pos-operative care instructions and keep your follow-up appointments so Dr. Weston can monitor your healing to ensure the best results are achieved.
