What is CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a revolutionary cosmetic procedure that is used to remove stubborn fat from targeted areas of the body. It is a non-invasive procedure, meaning that the surface of the skin isn’t broken, that has no downtime or recovery time, while still providing patients with visible results and improvements to the treated areas.

The procedure has been approved by the FDA as a body contouring technology that uses a process called cryolipolysis to freeze and permanently kill off fat cells that aren’t able to be permanently removed through diet or exercise. When the fat cells are frozen by the application of the CoolSculpting wand on the area being treated, the process will cause the cells to die and get eliminated through the body’s natural elimination process.

This removes the fat cells from the body permanently, unlike any other treatment available. CoolSculpting works best on targeted areas where stubborn fat lives, such as under the chin or jawline, thighs, abdomen, upper arm, under the butt, on the back, and the area referred to as bra fat. The ideal CoolSculpting candidate is already either at or near their ideal body weight and shape, who are looking to get rid of the extra pockets of fat that continue to linger. It is not intended or suitable for people looking to lose large amounts of fat, and is not meant to be used as a weight-loss tool.

What is the CoolSculpting treatment like?

CoolSculpting uses a non-invasive cooling panel, or wand for smaller areas, placed on the targeted area of the body. A protective gel pad will be placed between your skin and the CoolSculpting tool so that the tool never actually makes direct contact with the skin. Through the CoolSculpting panel or wand, the cryolipolysis process will target the fat cells underneath the surface of the tool.

During the procedure, patients may experience their skin feeling like it is being pulled, tugged, or pinched, along with sensations of tingling, stinging, cold, cramping, and aching in the area being treated. As the procedure continues, the treated area will start to become numb and the feelings of discomfort will subside. The treatment itself if relatively quick and otherwise non-intrusive. Patients will be able to sit or lay back and relax during the procedure while the CoolSculpting machine works its magic.

During the treatment, patients may choose to read a book, catch up with emails or social media on their phone, or simply sit back and relax. Once the CoolSculpting procedure itself is completed, the practitioner performing the procedure will remove the applicator and protective gel pad, and then gently massage the area that was treated. This will help with breaking up the frozen fat cells, which will enhance the results of the procedure and fat reduction.

Prior to starting CoolSculpting treatment, patients should discuss their treatment options and candidacy for the procedure with a trained, knowledgeable and certified practitioner like Dr. Jane Weston. She will be able to walk you through the pros and cons, determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure, and let you know what results in you can expect.

When will I see the results from CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting results are not immediate, although the fat cells will become frozen during your treatment. It will take time for the cells to ultimately die off and be eliminated from the body, and for the skin in the treated areas to shrink back to where the fat cells used to be. Visible results are often seen within one to three months following a CoolSculpting session, with final results taking approximately six months or more.

Within that time, and continuing after the final results are visible, patients will need to ensure they are maintaining a healthy diet and moderate exercise program in order to prevent the growth of new fat cells, which will counteract the CoolSculpting procedure. Depending on the individual and the amount of fat in the treated area, additional treatments may be recommended or required in order to reach the desired results. Your CoolSculpting practitioner can help to manage your expectations and build out a treatment plan that is unique to you and the area where you are looking to reduce stubborn fat.
